Gross WPM
Every character you typed ÷ 5, per minute. It shows how fast your fingers move, mistakes included.
Gross WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM
Gross speed minus the words you left wrong. This is the number exams and employers care about.
Net WPM = Gross WPM − (wrong words ÷ minutes)
Exercises to improve typing accuracy
- 1
Home row first
Keep fingers on A S D F and J K L ;. Type 'asdf jkl;' lines for 3 minutes until you stop looking down.
- 2
Accuracy-only rounds
Run a 1-minute Easy test and aim for 98% accuracy, not speed. Slow, correct typing builds the muscle memory.
- 3
Weak-key drills
Note which letters turn red most. Type 10 words that use that key (for example 'quick, quiet, quote') twice a day.
- 4
Read one word ahead
Your eyes should be on the next word while your fingers finish the current one. This alone adds 5–10 WPM.
- 5
Punctuation & numbers
Switch to Medium, then Hard. Government passages have commas, dates, Rs. amounts and brackets.
- 6
Exam-length practice
Once a week, take the 5-minute Assessment test. Real skill tests run 10–15 minutes, so stamina counts.
Typing test questions
What is the difference between gross WPM and net WPM?
Gross WPM counts every character you typed divided by 5, per minute, including mistakes. Net WPM subtracts the words you left wrong: Net WPM = Gross WPM − (wrong words ÷ minutes). Exams and employers usually look at net speed.
How is WPM calculated in this typing test?
One word is counted as 5 characters including spaces, the standard used by most typing tests and SSC. If you type 200 characters in 1 minute, your gross speed is 40 WPM.
What typing speed is needed for SSC CHSL?
SSC CHSL LDC/JSA posts need 35 words per minute in English or 30 words per minute in Hindi on a computer, roughly 10,500 or 9,000 key depressions per hour. Data Entry Operator posts use a speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour. Always confirm the current rule in the official notice.
How do I take the Hindi typing test?
Choose हिन्दी, then switch on a Hindi keyboard. On Windows add Hindi in Language settings and pick Hindi Traditional (Inscript) or install a Remington Gail Unicode layout; on a phone use Gboard Hindi. The passage is in Unicode (Mangal-style) Hindi, the same text type SSC and CPCT use. KrutiDev font typing is not supported.
Which Hindi keyboard is allowed in SSC and CPCT?
SSC and CPCT generally allow Hindi typing in either the Inscript or Remington Gail layout with Unicode text. Pick one layout early and practise only on that, because switching layouts later slows you down. Check the latest notice for the options in your exam.
What is KDPH in a typing test?
KDPH means key depressions per hour. It counts every key you press, including backspace, and scales it to one hour. SSC uses KDPH for Data Entry Operator skill tests. This tool shows your KDPH in the result card.
How is accuracy calculated?
Accuracy is the share of correct keystrokes out of all characters you typed, including mistakes you later fixed with backspace. So correcting an error does not erase it from accuracy, just like a strict exam.
What is a good typing speed?
40 WPM with 95% accuracy is good for most office and government jobs. 25–40 WPM is intermediate, and 60+ WPM with high accuracy is professional level.
How can I increase my typing speed quickly?
Practice 15 minutes daily, use all ten fingers, do not look at the keyboard, and focus on accuracy before speed. Most learners add 10–15 WPM in 4–6 weeks of steady practice.
