What has CBSE disclosed

In a reply dated October 14, CBSE said its Finance Division had not received a payment approval for the company that scanned Class 12 examination answer books. The response does not confirm that the vendor was paid.

The board’s finance section also said it had no information about penalties imposed on Coempt Edu Teck. CBSE officials had told Hindustan Times in June that the company would face penalties for problems in the online marking system.

Why students are following the issue

The on-screen marking system was used during the 2026 Class 12 board examinations. Students complained about unclear scanned answer sheets, incorrect copies and technical problems before and after the results were released on May 13.

Reports also mentioned unchecked answers and differences between marks shown on individual pages and the final totals during the re-evaluation process from May 19 onwards.

Answer-book access and contract rules

CBSE said in an earlier RTI response that 11,37,560 answer books had been scanned and provided to students by 6pm on May 26, which was the extended deadline for such applications.

The tender allowed financial deductions for service failures. One listed penalty was ₹1 lakh for every 15-minute delay in fixing an issue flagged by CBSE. The tender also included penalties linked to delayed root-cause reports, technical assistance and training.

CBSE, the education ministry and Coempt Edu Teck did not respond to repeated requests for comment on the payment and penalty position.

What you should do now

  1. If you received a scanned answer book, review the pages and the marks shown on them.
  2. Compare page-wise marks with the final total shown during the re-evaluation process.
  3. Keep copies of any answer-book records and complaints connected with the issue.
  4. Follow official CBSE communications for any further clarification about the OSM process.
